Can you take a period of unpaid leave?
If so, what are you waiting for?
Go for it.

My auntie had a years sabbatical arranged, confirmed by her employer so she could take a round the world trip. A week after she booked it they changed their minds said that if she didn't like it resign - so she did!
Best thing she's ever done she says and she now works casually, as and when for the local council on a zero hour contract which she loves.
If I were in her or your position I would do exactly the same. I would love to take six months off from 'life' and do a cycle tour of Briton, maybe one day

Depends how easy/quickly you can pick up work when you get back.

£10k is not much money to fall back on esp' after having spent some on your jaunt.

If you can walk straight back into an income flow then go!

53 years old , no mortgage , wife, grown up son , so no real commitments, after debts setlled have about 10 grand . Wondering wether to pack my job in and go touring on the continent for a few months as ive always wanted .

just the coming back and getting work im thinking about, any views welcome , constructive please

Touring on a bike or by other means of transport may i ask?

I did when I was about 45. It was tough getting a job when I got back, but it was definitely worth it - best thing I have ever done. By far the most difficult thing was just making the decision to go - once you are committed things get easier. It is worth thinking about going further afield - the near continent is quite expensive. Eastern Europe and Asia are a lot cheaper.

Go for it, but bear in mind what you need to have for when you get back. Setting up home again is expensive. I know because we did bigger off and do what we wanted for 12 months and had to set up home again afterwards. We have absolutely no regrets and would go at the blink of an eyelid if we had the money and my back was good enough. Right now South America looks great, but expensive to get to and from. Eastern Europe is only cheap in places like Rumania and Bulgaria, so I would consider south east asia if I could. I don't know if it is the right time of year for places like Burma and Thailand, but there is plenty of cycling to be had over there, but sadly £10k is not going to last long what with air fares and the likes. However, as I have already stated. You won't regret going, so if you really want to, get out there and do it.
