Life changing decision - any advice/experience?

Leaving the job open and then coming back in 3 months to tell your work that you're not returning after all is a personal decision which only you can decide that you're comfortable with.
Other than that I'd say do it.

To which I shall court HUGE controversy and say two words.

You seem to be confusing earning a living with going on holiday.
So you want to go on a very long holiday and not go out to work.

The key must simply be - What happens when you finish the long holiday when you have tired of it or run out of cash? I don't think we have enough info to sway you one way or the other as much depends on your situation in life.

I presently would work my holidays for a year for free if someone gave me a decent perm job, but that is only me applying my (dire) present situation on the issue.

Sorry if I have missed past posts but is say Lejog not enough to do? I think I would have got the bug out of my system with say two weeks holiday in the saddle.

I have a mate who has done something similar, but he's paid off his mortgage, sold most of his stuff (including giving his dog to a new family), rented his house out and upped and offed to cyle round Africa, and who knows where....he may never come back.....

Go for unpaid leave, and see how you feel on your return....
