Excellent video for demonstrating the importance of the lifesaver.

I would definately report the driver of that widow maker pass .

Well checked.

I don't see what the driver did that was so wrong - you were in the offside lane, he in the nearside lane. He might have come from the wrong lane, and be a bit fast, but that's nothing unusual. Good lifesaver though, that stopped you making a very unfortunate or stupid lane change.

Might be useful to see a Google Streetview of that junction - I assumed you were in a lane which was for going straight on and that the car was in the wrong lane, undertook you at speed and went stright on regardless of road markings... in which case he/she is a complete arse and should be done for dangerous driving at that speed with no thought for other road users. However, if both lanes went straight on then I'm a bit confused about why you are, as BM says, in the offside lane leaving the other lane free. Bit difficult to see what's happening with it being dark.

Yes, I'm not sure, and that would be fair comment. It does look like two lanes going straight on on the far side of the junction where Magnatom shouts. Sorry if I got it wrong!

I intentionally left a bit of footage in at the start to show that the left lane was a left turn filter. So the pick up either started behind me and decided to undercut, at speed, or took the wrong lane across the junction. Either is very poor driving. Also I had indicated that I was pulling over before he passed, and he was speeding.

Yeah, but still, he's in the other lane, it's not clear, so chill and wait for him to pass surely? Nothing more than normal negotiation needed.

This is why I don't like left filter lanes at crossroads. Unlike right filter lanes they don't improve traffic flow much unless its really busy and they make the junction more difficult for cyclists who like to follow the rules of the road. And then you get idiots like this one who either don't see the road markings or choose to ignore them.

My approach is usually to observe the lane markings up until the junction and then gradually drift back left as I'm crossing the junction to avoid impeding faster/impatient traffic too much. But then you still get idiots like the guy in this video who you have to look out for.

Sometimes it might be safer to ignore the lane markings and use the left lane to go straight on?

Eh? You seriously don't see a problem here?! Undercutting a cyclist at speed through a junction in a lane that 10 meters back was a left filter, when the cyclist has indicated he intends to move left and has indicated such! Would this driver pass his test for instance doing this? Would waiting 5 seconds have been safer? Had I not looked at the last second as lots do not, would I have been killed or seriously injured?

+1

I have a similar junction the one of the routes home, and I would usually take a diagonal route across the junction (after checking it's clear first of course) to clear the faster moving traffic.

If the potholes are bad enough to warrant staying in the right hand lane, then I would be expecting an undertake occasionally. Wait for them to pass (if they are that impatient I wouldn't want them behind me anyway) then move over.

It's not great driving, but no, I can't see the reason for such a squeal from you despite the obvious surprise and fright. You were safe in the offside lane, once he's past then you could equally safely change lanes as you wanted to. MSM and all that.
