I prefer the stairs. Using the stairs is good for cycling muscles!

Once I visited a client to meet two people I dealt with frequently. One was the manager, the other their shipping clerk. After they met me in the foyer the lift was summoned and when it came the manager waved me into it but I was surprised to see the clerk did not enter but used the stairs. He later told me that only management were allowed to use lifts.

You would love Chinese hotels....here are some additional rules that are sacrosanct there:

1) When waiting for the lift you must press the button as often as possible as that speeds up the arrival of the lift
2) When it arrives you must get into the lift before anyone gets out so as to create maximum congestion
3) When anyone gets out of a lift you are in, you must press the "close doors" button repeatedly
4) If you are in the lift with a lot of luggage you must stand in front of the door so as to stop others getting out of the lift
5) Smoke 'em if you've got 'em

...and wee chaps in silly hats to press the buttons for you.

Unless you are going up more than 5 floors, run up the stairs! If you are going up more than 5 floors, get out 5 floors lower and run up the last 5 flights of stairs.

If you are going down less than 10 floors, run down the stairs! If you are going down more than 10 floors, get out 10 floors higher and run down the last 10 flights of stairs.

I used to race the lift and beat it.

so would I.

some of the "gentlemen" I work with appear to be staging some kind of dirty protest.

Muscles maybe, but have a dodgy hip that does NOT do going down stairs
My knees were like that until I lost 50 pounds in weight. I thought they were knackered but realised a few weeks ago that they don't hurt any more!

My hips are on the way out too. I can still walk briskly but running isn't so good any more, and I have to be careful getting on and off my bike.

How does that work if you are going down 11 floors ? Take the lift down 1 floor then run down the rest ?
