In urban riding, it probably makes little difference, but as I have a SON hub dynamo on the Brompton, there's no downside to leaving the lights on all the time (SON claims 4% drag with lights on vs 1% with lights off, but I can't detect the difference).

On rural roads, where I may have traffic approaching at 60mph plus, I want them to see me as far ahead as possible, so have Dinottes in strobe mode front and rear (amber to rear). They make a huge difference.

So you're a moving hazard then are you? Or do you just use your flashing amber rear lights to park anywhere?

I've been called worse. :-)

I've tried both amber and red, and amber definitely slows cars from further back. Partly as it can be seen further in daylight (around a mile vs around 3/4-mile), and partly as drivers are used to 'flashing red = bicycle = ignore' whereas flashing amber forces them to evaluate what it is.

I'm not sure about that. Enough car drivers seem able to ignore other motorists indicating to make me think that most of then drive HUA and take practically zero notice of external stimuli

If it's foggy, wet, darker than usual, I have flashers* on, or on busy roads. Just done some cycling in Surrey, and I used them there, as it's a sight busier than Northumberland.

*Yes, I know :okay:

I have both flashing in the day for the following reasons..
Rear light... For when I'm riding into the sun, and the driver behind is also driving into the sun, he's more likely to pick me up in his vision if there is a red flashing light, on my arse, contrasting my silhouette.
Front light... Useful as drivers pick up the flashing light out of the corner of their eye, in their rear view or side mirrors, when I'm filtering or coming up behind. They often move their position slightly to accommodate me, something that only seems to happen when I do have it on so I think it works.

Also if a driver p!sses me off, like when they cut you up to sit in a queue, I sit behind and point it directly at their rear view just to p!ss em off
