I walked a dog down to Digley reservoir near Holme village last night and saw spooky red lights in the sky way above me, about 2 miles away, with a mist swirling around them. It turned out to be the broadcast antenna on top of Holme Moss! Looking in the opposite direction, I could see a column of mist-shrouded red lights on the Emley Moor transmitter tower.

Sorry I dont buy the Chinese lantern theory, I have done too many all night challenge walks to be taken in by that one but I will not discard the theory out of hand and you have to remember last night was relatvely calm and these were moving fairly fast and though I admit to having had a couple of good size whiskeys I was sober.

Ignore the doubters Cush, can't blame everything on the Chinese.
I seen bright lights dancing back and forwards in the clouds couple weeks ago. Im surrounded by fields, was pitch black and silent with no wind!

THEY'RE OUT THERE!!! :secret:

This is what I was told by our farmer friend. If they land in fields the wire can get cut up by farm machinery which the cows can ingest.

I don't know why they cant be made without wire, twisted paper could be made stiff enough I would have thought.

The wire is used to support a burning square/rectangle of wax impregnated card.

More recent versions use a wire-free 'fire cradle'

I wonder if any ones house/shed/fence has been set on fire by these aerial incendiary devices.

They generally descend when the flame has died.

However, I have seen a lantern fail to make sufficient altitude to clear the main stage at Solfest Festival, crash into the amplifier/speaker stack at the back of the stage and have the flames stamped out by roadies. It was more entertaining than the band on at the time.

A couple of years ago I happened to be outside putting the bins out just as one of these wretched things landed on the roof of the house 2 doors down from ours and proceeded to properly catch fire :stop: . Luckily the chap came out as he had heard something bump on the roof and managed to douse it down by lobbing snowballs at it from the 6 inches of snow on the ground!!
