They eat them apparently and it messes up their stomachs possibly leading to death iirc. I bet anyone with a thatched roof dreads them.

This is what I was told by our farmer friend. If they land in fields the wire can get cut up by farm machinery which the cows can ingest.

I don't know why they cant be made without wire, twisted paper could be made stiff enough I would have thought.
