Yea I kind of assumed it would be obvious that even a cow wont eat an on fire lantern so I did not mention it. I thought wrong.

I don't know why they cant be made without wire, twisted paper could be made stiff enough I would have thought.

A similar thing was tried by the Japanese in WWII http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_balloon - not very effective though !
