Don't buy those little sachets of descaler at your supermarket. Buy citric acid in bulk from Ebay. You can get 2kg of it in powder form for under a tenner. That does an awful lot of shower heads, kettles, coffee makers, taps etc. Good tip about the plastic bag @ianrauk.

A couple of kilos of potassium nitrate offers much more potential for fun: curing ham, tree stump rotting, crater making......

Lime scale update ... I wrapped my taps in small plastic bags filled with limelight liquid and left them overnight and they now look fantastic! I've also ordered some Kilrock from Amazon (£2.50 delivered) which I'll use to keep the lime scale at bay in the future.
