Is there any one out there who enjoys line managing, my team are small in number but sometimes (most of the time) I just wish I could ignore what they do or rather don't do. I hate it, I need to be a 'sole trader' but I love the rest of my job and where I work. bah.......

Yeah, know how you feel, but can't offer any encouragement. I was a line manager at my current, hated it, went back to the coal face. Much happier doing my own thing, just getting on with the job at hand. Colleagues and students are much more relaxed about coming to me now for support with tech problems than when I was the manager.

Fully agree with previous posts. The hassles of being a manager are far in excess of the monetary compensation offered IMHO. I made the decision several years ago to move from a position of management to a very specialist line of which my governor has little knowledge or qualification. Result........peace and quiet for most of the time and a recognition of my professional skills.

I'm not in management. I'm on the shopfloor. My line manager is next to useless. He doesn't have a back bone and can't or won't stand up for us to anyone. We are short staffed but he doesn't pitch in and help or even arrange more staff. We don't have appraisals or reviews, so I have no idea how good I am at my job. I can only get that from thinking 'well I haven't been told off for anything, I must be doing ok.' Consequently my self esteem is very low. It wasn't brilliant to start with, but doing this job just makes me feel worse. Just a "thank you for doing x" or "well done for the work you did on y" would go a million miles to help me feel better about myself.
If you say thank you or well done you can't be as bad as some managers.

Managing people well is one of the greatest things you can do.

There's nothing quite like getting people to do things they don't want to; and getting them to do those things well and enjoy it in the process.
