Linux on a netbook

Hi,

I am trying this out on my asus aspire one - I used the eeebuntu distribution as this has all the drivers for netbooks included and it is not just slightly slower than XP but catastrophically slower.

I remember eeexbuntu (a different distrubution) being pretty good on an Asus 701.

I was always under the impression Linux was lighter weight and faster than XP.

Any ideas how I can make my AA1 fly with Linux?

Sadly, Linux distis are becoming bloated. XP was designed to run (initially) on computers which are now over 10 years old so it's pretty slick, even on a netbook.

For lightweight Linux distros, you could try Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux or Tiny Core Linux. I believe all will boot from a USB drive, you don't need to do full installs to try them out.

Odd, we've an Acer notebook, and it runs a treat.

Perhaps you need to "debloat", why is it running slowly?
(out of memory, cpu thrashing, paging?)

In a command window, sudo top should give you a clue what's happening.

Although I thought that thre would have been more made of the idea of throwing out of windows.

Thanks, I'm going to try the old eeexbuntu distro. This is unfortunately nearly 2 years old now but I think with a firefox update it should be fine for me.

Works a treat on my Acer Netbook.

Running the full version of Ubuntu 9.10 on my Acer lappy since the day it was released... almost got rid of Windows completely, except that I need it to update my Tom Tom
