I once went to a tech jobs show. A group of very secretive recruitment people asked if I would be interested in applying for a job with them. They wouldn't tell me what the job
was, and they wouldn't tell me what the job
wasn't either, no doubt for fear that I might eventually work out what the job
was if they gave me a long enough list of what it
wasn't!
They told me I would have to be prepared to undergo a security check and sign the Official Secrets act before they would say any more ...
I had a suspicion that I knew what the job
was. This was based on the kind of jobs that I
was qualified to do, and the jobs that I was
not qualified to do, and the kind of jobs that people would be so secretive about, plus a snippet of tech gossip that I had picked up a few weeks prior to that.
I took a wild punt and jokily said something along the lines of "
So you want me to work on cruise missile control systems then?"
Their stunned reaction said it all ...
(They wanted to know where I got my information from. I told them that I had read an article describing the kind of technology probably deployed in those control systems, and no thanks, I was not interested in working on systems designed to wipe out large numbers of people from a distance.)
