I decided to bring my mountain bike to Uni with me rather than my road bike. This is because out of the choice of two evils I'd rather the mountain bike got stolen than the road bike (touch wood). I usually lock it outside the art gallery just next to my accomadation. I take everything off that can be easily nicked (seat, lights, horn). I use two locks and even put the crappy cable lock through the drinks bottle cage - just encase :becool:.

I get to my bike today, don't notice anything...start unlocking it, put drinks bottle in, put horn on....come to put seat post in. Something doesn't seem right. Some little **** nicked my quick release to hold the seat in!

Out of all the things to steal or damage on the bike it's actually quite a vital piece, but so petty.

The security guards in the art centre which it is parked outside were really nice and have made me a make shift seat lock. It's like a metal cable tie.

I went to the bike shop today but they're not getting any in until Wednesday. Hopefully this metal cable tie (thing) will work until then (i only have to cycle to work and back and then again to the bike shop).

I have learnt my lesson though. I've finally found out where the locked cage I have a code for. I'd of never of found it if I wasn't told, it's like Dr Evil's lair. I've locked it up there and hopefully it'll be okay. It is possile for them to nick the seat, if they unscrew the metal cable tie thing but it's a chance I'll have to take.

It's a real downer to have someone steal something from you.... Sorry to hear it, hope that new place is a bit better. Can't stand thieves, especially when they can't be bothered to find a job and earn money themselves.

get an allen key bolt one when you replace it so that its less likely to happen again

i generally just lock my seat through the saddle rails down onto the bike so that i don't have to take it with me.

the road bike is generally all imperial bolts :becool:

Nah, I want a quick release one so I can take the seat with me. I've got a back bag on it so it's easier. Didn't realise it was so easy to steal them. Hopefully in it's new home it'll be better. There are a few CCTV cameras in there to deter people.

I've not let it bother me. I'm going to be £7 out of pocket but I've still got the rest of the bike. yes it's annoying. I'm assuming it was more just a petty act of vandalism rather than anything else. Someone might have nicked it for their bike, no idea.

Oh well, just got to move on. It's just annoying as I could of had a nice hour bike ride rather than an hour of getting things sorted and a 20 min sprint to the shop and back.

They nicked the clamp itself?! Bounders. Put a hose clip round it for the mo. Bit of cloth inside so it doesn't damage the paint.

Unless that's what you mean by a metal cable tie thing...

Something like that. The bike is cyclible. No off road on it which isn't a problem :becool:. On the road it should be okay. Worst case the seat becomes loose/i get a shock as I fall to the bottom of the seat post

Thomas - at various places on the UEA campus are *secure* bike sheds. I know this because there is one right outside the hall of residence my son was in last year - and it's one of several. Go to the security lodge and ask which one is nearest to your accommodation - get permission to use it - it doesn't cost anything (didn't last year anyhow). You'll need *thinks* your campus card to prove your ID. Then you should be given the keypad number to open the lock on the secure cycle storage. Inside the secure bike sheds are loads of sheffield stands. Lock your bike to one as normal - and then you just remember to lock the shed on exit - you've effectively two layers of security. Last year my son had no problems at all with bike security.

Edit.. just realised you have the above now. *Doh*. Leaving the post anyhow - hopefully my son's experience will offer a bit of encouragement!

Hah, yep  Thanks though! I've had the code for a little while now but it's a little bit further to walk so i left it where it was as I was reasonbly happy.

Where I have locked it you wouldn't know there were bike sheds there - It's like a bike aircraft hanger.

I'm really just glad that the security at the art centre (not campus) were really nice and have actually given me a temp' fix so I don't have to get the awful bus to work tomorrow and I can get it to the bike shop without having to have the seat at the lowest position!

I would just smear some of my own poo on the quick release, that'll teach 'em!

hahaha...until I come to take the seat off at the end of every ride. Hmmm. maybe I should just connect the bike to a car battery to stop people touching any of it
