I think a crash was expected. I did shout 'no way' when the rocket turned around - very Flash Gordon. If it had turned a bit earlier, it would have more thrust time as it looked like it came in too fast.

Elon Musk said there was a 1 in 3 chance of it all going top plan, and as a data gathering test flight of largely tried technology it was a great success. All that newly found knowledge will go into SN9 which is pretty much fully built and ready to go
