My own deeds are now lodged with my solicitor which is a free service they offer.
It needs to be free, too, because deeds dematerialised following the Land Registration Act 2004. Paper copies of registered titles are just that, copies - the definitive document is held digitally by the Land Registry and anyone can get a printout whenever they want for a fiver. You will be perfectly safe to wrap your chips in the copies.

When I paid off my mortgage I received the deeds to the house. Did they not send these to you? If so I don't see how your house could be repossessed?

Nope.. they still claim I owe them money , but cannot tell me how much or why!

Hence the Ombudsman's intervention. However they are refusing to either correspond or speak to the Ombudsman, so they cannot find out either!

Thank you for that information. You are right as far as registered properies are concerned but not all properties are registered yet. Mine is not and so I shall resist the temptation to take my deeds to the chippy because they are still essential evidence of my ownership!

Which is a good reason to get the title registered. You can do it yourself with a form from the Land Reg (solicitor will say they need to do it but it is fairly easy for a property with recognised boundaries and may only cost £200 or less.

It is well worth doing and if there is a problem it is addressed and sorted out.

Write to them and ask them for a redemptin figure. I think they are legally required to give this.

Who was the lender before Santander? I think Santander have been lumbered with the good along with the bad in the rapid takeover of various banks and building societies.

Thanks for the info.

Concerning the OP, Barclays and Lloyds share the honours wrt complaints to the Banking Ombudsman. Santander is 5th.
