Locking a bike at Leeds station?

Next week I'm going to visit a client site in Cardiff for the day. Getting the train from Leeds first thing then getting back late evening. Buses round here are unreliable. I considered taking the folder but the destination is only 10min walk from the station so it's not really worth lugging it around all day. So I'm thinking of locking a bike up at the station. I've read there are racks near platform 1 which would be more secure than ones outside the station. I'd take the old hybrid which isn't worth a lot.
Thoughts?

Platforms 4 and 5 appears to have more staff wandering about, less chance of it going from there.

I've fairly regularly used Newport train station over the last ~6 years, to get between Southampton and Prestatyn, often with a bike.

Is it worth being daring and having a little cycle near Newport, or Cardiff station, or are the roads far too busy for it to be pleasant?

Not concerned with the traffic. Probably worse on the way from mine to Leeds. It’s 10 min walk from Cardiff central so as I say probably not worth lugging the folding bike on and off the train for that.

It is worth bearing in mind the recent announcement by British Transport Police that they won't investigate the theft of any bicycle left for more than two hours at any railway station. Make sure you have a good lock for the bike :okay:

Yes - but personally I think this is a disgusting thing to say

They are basically saying
"Yeah we will provide cycle storage and locking facilities
but if it gets nicked we don't really care at all
Thieves are just fine in our book after about 11 in the morning"

Even if they investigate it, even if there is cctv, a simple hoodie thwarts the whole attempt.

Even if by some chance they get a shot of the villains face it relies on a) someone recognising them and, b) that person being willing to give a statement confirming the ID and prepared to appear in court, before the can do anything with it.

And even if they do ID them and lock them up,your property will be long gone.

A good lock is indeed essential! Or a folder and take it with you.

I agree
but to openly state it is just mad

It just tell organised thieves that having a wander round at about 10 and take a few photos
then go back after lunch and if the bike is still there then if you can get it away then no-one cares

Imagine the fuss if they applied that to something important like cars!!

The sheet bags have long known this, its hardly news to them. And what they dont know their solicitors glady fill in for them.

The only people it would come as a surprise to are the habitually law abiding, who think every infraction must be followed by in a Sherlock Holmes type manner regardless of the futility.

So as a practical matter there is no harm whatsoever done by stating what everyone actually involved already knew.
