Locking your bike

What's the best way to lock one's bike? What kind of lock is best to use? What's all this malarky about quick release? If I quick release one of the wheels or the seat are they easy enough to put back to how they were before?

Depends where you are locking your bike really. I have my good bike locked to the garage wall with a mid price D-lock. At work my commuter is locked to the bike shed using a cheap lock, but then it's past the security barrier so the risk is lower (and when I talk to people at work about commuting, they all say "where do you put your bike!")

I'm just trying to think where and how I'm going to store my bike while I'm at class's at uni as we all know bikes go missing quite frequently in student areas.
I'm not exactly going to be able to carry my wheels or seat about with me either.
Any suggestions folk?

I use a "KRYPTONITE KRYPTOLOK" for when im at Uni and for locking at work and in City centre.
You can check it out on ebay ~ I think theres a seller who sells the main D-Lock with a 4foot 'kryptoflex' cable included.
A great piece of kit for 20quid!!

I use the Kryptoflex Cable to go thru my front wheel, making sure i thread thru the Forks suspension crown, and back out and connect to the D-Lock. The D-lock inturn gets secured to the bike frame and sumthing solid of course. Main rule of thumb is - lock up your bike in a area where other bikes are, most theives will go for the bike which is less secured.

some of these locks seem so heavy to be carrying around yet presumably if they're not heavy they don't do the job.

I use a Kryptonite D-Lock (Evolution I think) with a krptoflex also. I tend to put the cable through the back wheel to the lock and lock the front wheel and frame to a rack. At work I've got a heavier Kryptonite (New York) D lock and a longer cable which goes through both wheels and leave them there.

I am surprised by the number of people who slip the chain through their helmet and leave it attached to the bike.

Because I would have thought it vulnerable to theft and vandalism more than a bike on its' own.

I wouldn't be worried about theft if I had locked it to the bike but I would worry about the vandalism. Some idiot might leave something in it

I used to lock my helmet to my bike to save carrying it around...
