Why when running low on petrol i KNOW i should drive slower to conserve fuel, so why do i feel like i need to drive faster to get to the garage before it runs out !!

I was once desperately trying to nurse my empty car to a petrol station when it finally ran out. Fortunately it was at the top of a steep hill and I was able to roll down and onto the forecourt. I never let it get below 1/2 a tank now.

My mates dad was giving us a lift in his Wolsey Hornet, when it ran out of fuel. He got us to lift the back up and rattle it to tip some fuel into the carb and we had to wait by the side of the road until he got back from the nearby filling station.

My mum used to knit faster as the ball of wool was getting very small so she could finish the item before it ran out...

Wimps the lot of you. I tend to know the official capacity for the fuel tank on my vehicles and have a little game I play where I try to get as close to it as possible at refill time. I have managed 103 ltrs in my 100ltr Merc Sprinter tank a couple of times and it is not unusual to be less than 2-3 ltrs off dry in the family cars. My old Jeep did catch me out shortly after I got it a few years ago. The 4ltr automatic spluttered to a stop on the school run one morning just 4-5 miles after the warning light came on, That kind of warning just isn't fair!

On modern cars, the warning light comes on when you have 5 or 8 litres of fuel left in. Plenty to get you to a filling station.

A great game, until you forget that the fuel pick up doesnt go to the very bottom of the tank to help avoid sucking up crud, leaving the last litre or two completely unreachable.
