London Cycle Scheme

Hi All,

I went to the cycle show on Friday, and saw Mr Contador although I could not be bothered to Queue for an autograph.

I was wondering if anyone that went has seen the chosen bike design for the London cycle hire scheme due to launch next year.

Pretty much the same as the ones in Paris, although most of those got nicked, they are certainly big solid bikes cant think why you would want to nick one, but certainly sounds like a good idea, no indication on price and it wont be integrated with your Oyster card which seems odd.

Lots of people took the opportunity to test ride one and they seemed very capable.

They seemed sturdy and practical, but I did not test ride one. Hub brakes/gears, front luggage capability, mudguards.

I tried one today and I was quite impressed despite them looking clunky and heavy it rode well, just the brakes weren't that great

A lot of the Paris ones ended up in North Africa, apparently. My mate saw one in Rabat!

Ive got to say they dont look to bad and would consider using one if I had to.

I wouldn't really say it is organised crime, after all there are much more profitable illegal endeavours one could pursue with the French, say drugs, all forms of trafficking, and supplying boys to particular government official(s).

Anyone know why the bars are that thick / faired? Are they protection against some formerly unperceived risk with brake cable tangling / theft?

+1 Definitely, no exposed components, cables, bolts, nuts etc.

All neatly hidden away.(until they need servicing?)

They look okay and would certainly seem to be capable of getting you around London without big hassle.

I saw them at the show and was quite impressed. Stylish but not something that's too nickable because they're so distinctive. The weight would borrow me but having had a go on a steel Pashley owned by a friend and found it surprisingly nippy I reckon they'd be fine when in central.

Depending on the price I'd consider using one instead of taking my bike in if I couldn't face the train/10-mile ride into the centre.

Is there a sort of Velib-extreme subculture developing in Paris? Youths nicking the bikes and trashing them in stunts? Might youtube it this evening.
