It's a confusion over posts I think go back to around post #100, @User seems to dismiss filtered permeability as not worth having, but having just read 7 pages of this stuff I think what happened is there was a presumption that it was removing bikes rather than cars.Well I suppose that is an argument of some sort.
Of all the talk of the Dutch, I believe segregated lanes are viewed as the only place a bike is allowed in some/all circumstances? That sort of situation would have a lot of us up in arms. I have maybe a weeks experience 'commuting' in and out of Amsterdam as my Dutch riding experience, people ride slower on crap bikes because you can't ride the segregated paths quickly. The road surfaces on a lot of them are block paving and not great, they are busy and quite hectic, it would be bordering on dangerous to ride them at real speed. I've seen a lot of potential accidents, but surprisingly (to me) only one actual one. The experience is similar, but not the same to riding the superhighway route (I've only really used the one in to Tower Hill from Docklands) where again you are constrained with what you can do because of the narrowness of the route for the number of bikes involved. I haven't seen much overtaking there, the steady enough stream of oncoming traffic has always kind of precluded it.
Also, in Amsterdam anyway (and particularly just after Holland have one an amazing World Cup victory) incidents of drunk/stoned riding seem pretty much on par with the UK.
Personally, I'd be worried that spending all of this money would lead us to follow the Dutch Lesson and find bikes officially segregated from cars. While that might help some, as I'm in the other group it is not in my best interest.
