Perhaps he had no alternative but this comes across as an utter train wreck - was there literally no contingency in place? Someone asked about a time extension and they got shut down rather decisively. I suspect Audax Club Parisienne would have had to agree a time extension and knowing the way the Audax organisations seem to operate, it'd be a mountain to move... People have invested a shoot ton of time and money to participate on this ride and to abort it without any transparent discussions seems pretty unfair. I feel sorry for all the volunteers and riders.
There may have been a way of extending the time, but you have to think about the volunteers and others manning stations/checkpoints. And the effect of any extension on them.

Then consider that it would take only one person getting injured due to the event being allowed to continue, given the weather warning in place, for the event to be stopped for good. Volunteers would be harder find to man the check/rest points for the next time.

I've not done the checkpoint volunteering for a cycling event, but have done for long distance walking events. Going out to locate a person who should have checked in, but has been reported as in trouble isn't a nice thing to do.

From what I've read about the stop, the organisers did the only thing possible, and sensible.

Ian McB checked in at Boston about an hour ago, less than 200km to go. Relentless...

He's put the northbound ride on Strava now. 502.17 miles in 28hr 32 moving, 33:29 elapsed. 17.6 mph average!

Left Writtle at 4pm Sunday and got to Malton at 1pm Monday.
18 hours spent at Malton before finally leaving at 7am Tuesday.
Back at Writtle 5pm Wednesday.

The downside of starting in the last group meant I never got to meet my first change of clothes at Richmond.

Given the time constraints of the event, and the length of the riding pause, I think the curtailment of the event would have been a bit of a no brainer for the organisers - disappointing, but the only available/workable choice.

I've volunteered since 2013. This was the year I had planned to ride the event but Polymyalgia Rheumatica put a stop to that plan. It was a very strange experience, as a volunteer, setting up a control (Moffat) for 2000+ riders and only seeing 2 😳
Did you have half a tonne of tinned ravioli left over?

Inside my skull
Richmond bike patrol in the early hours on Tue (about 2am), still blowing a hoolie once away from the shelter of the school building. Some helmets and other unsecured gear were found over 400m away from the bike park. Luckily they had some reflectives and I picked them up when playing my torch across the dark school fields towards the cricket pitch. bikes were found parked half way up the control inbound route, all around the tennis courts, and spread out into the school playing fields. Bike patrol was a long walk.

Overnight bike patrol I had a fleece and alpine down duvet under my hiviz. Anything less and I’d have been too cold at walking pace. I was one of the team leaders for marshalling. One of our Marshall’s on Monday morning when the rain was biblical and wind blowing away, had to go inside after 30 mins because they were too cold.

When I was on control desk on my previous shift, the chefs came over to ask how many inbound. First request we reckoned 700 inbound, then 500 inbound. For some riders who I thought would get the reference, I said “Welcome to Hotel California”.

Some riders took around 11 hours to cover the distance from Malton to Richmond. A distance of only 94km, to give an idea of conditions. Many reports of the roads being lined riders stopped at side of the road, exhausted. Some riders holed up at Rainton, 45km away, too scared to continue in conditions.

We had to ration food. One of the brevet control stamps was being used to ensure riders weren’t returning for multiple portions. We had to stop riders taking blankets to sleep. We had to reserve them for first aid, for those riders truly hypothermic in a bad way.

We cranked up the heating in the control.

We had between 1,000 to 1,250 riders holed up here overnight Mon / Tue. When we released them Tue morning we released at a rate of 400 per hour.
