Paying for a bike ride always seems wonky to me

I mean why?

Maybe as I have led many many free rides in the past.

Hell, I even find the ctc collection of 50p at the lunch stop damn odd

I suppose the sportive and the like organisers justify it by the 'extras' they provide.

Timing chips, some food, a start/finish 'facility' rather than the side of the road, goody bag for finishers, etc.
