I spent most weekends in London during the football season & absolutely love it, the food, the beer, the culture, all superb!

However, I certainly wouldn't want to cycle around it & could not believe how many cyclists we saw crossing on a red light at a pelican crossing outside the pub we were in!!:stop:

Each to his own really - you either like the place or you don't.

My wife and I were born there but unless we absolutely have to we avoid going back like the plague.

It's a filthy, stinking place that's too noisy, too crowded, utterly charmless & populated by people who think our national London-centric bias is wholly acceptable and indeed a god given right..

On the other hand my S-I-L who lives in 3 blooming great houses scattered across London (not at the same time - she flits from one to the other depending on whim) thinks more or less the same of Cumbria!

The only time she ever came here she hated the lack of streetlights (our village has none), was irritated by the birdsong (all day long in our garden and surrounding woods) and detested the sheep baa-ing first thing in the morning as it woke her up.

As I said, each to their own.

Yep - it was always grubby and unwelcoming. It's OK for a quick visit but the environment is a stressful one IMHO.

So - what's the recommended brew down there? (I'm visiting next week ) Hopefully Watneys xx( has gone down the pan.
My favourite London beer is Fullers. London Pride is an excellent bitter at around 5%, ESB is that little bit stronger and darker. It's not to everyone's taste of course but I'd recommend trying a Pride at least once while you're down...or is it up?

yes, the capital is grubby, smelly and full of foreigners... but enough of edinburgh (which is a total dump). i'm a londoner, but i've always lived on the fringe. it's a huge city, so what do you expect? compared to nyc it's lovely. it's reasonably safe and has some great parks to go and escape the hubbub and wonderful museums.

there are far worse places in the UK

Used to drink that in the Anchor and Hope in Upper Clapton - the landlord had been there for 50 years at the time. I think they only served two beers, so there was a good turnover and the London Pride was always nice and fresh (none of that nasty northern sprinkler business either).

We have been a few times, did the touristy stuff and I have enjoyed my time there. I agree with others about not wanting to live there, too noisy and busy. I enjoy my steady walk to work in the morning, clears my head and wakes me up, I would hate to have to commute every day on over- crowded heavily priced buses/tube.

Spent five days there 18 months ago, usual tourist stuff. Loved it. Lots more cosmopolitan, and certainly feels safer out later at night as the place is busy. You wouldn't wander round Manchester at 10pm with kids.
