Imagine a world in which the Daily Mail was a vile left wing newspaper. It's editorial would probably include:

"It cannot be coincidental that the majority of riots in the last thirty years have happened when the Tories have been in power".

Well, the Daily Mail is not a vile left wing newspaper - it is in fact a vile right wing newspaper, so it's editorial will soon include:

"The disturbances and disorder are a direct result of immigration and the last governments failure to take a hard line with criminals".

One thing is guaranteed, once the smoke and subsided, the vile ignorant and ill-founded accusations will start from all parts of the political spectrum.

To try and "examine the underlying causes of criminal acts" in this context is the sort of faux intellectual bollocks and posturing that really isn't helpful and shows up the cynical political opportunism of those engaged in such an exercise.

I don't think any amount of pseudo-intellectual bullshit trying to rationalise the reasons behind it is going to help.

On this forum, there are some highly qualified experts in that area.

They looted Chalk Farm Evans cycles too!

Scum of the earth - and I tend to agree with your earlier comments, Becs. This affects individuals on an overtly personal basis...not just warranting idle comparison with governments or bankers / whatever.

This was in The Guardian newslines earlier today - it has since been removed...

a very real chance of being battered by a dozen faceless police,

By all the accounts that I've seen & heard, the chance of this appears to be very slim indeed.

CCTV, the worlds press and police cameras covering every square inch....

Yes, but they can't see through hoodies & masks.

You would stilll be desparate enough to risk all this for a "free" pair of trainers?

Erm, a lot more than just pairs of trainers

How desperate does one need to be to act like this? Therin lies the real issue.

Few appear to be 'desperately' stealing food or genuine necessities.

Its criminal. It's not justifiable. Its "out of order innit" (as Im already getting bored of hearing).

But merely to wipe these hoodies off as 'mindless idiots', is just a bit lazy dont you think?

Nor is sending in the army with their guns, tanks and water cannon not really going to ease any sense of helpless oppression is it?

Im not sure what the answer is, but Im pretty sure self indigination wont solve anything.

Oh come one. This isn't about oppression or even lack of opportunity. This is just thugs doing things because they think they can get away with it. Smashing a baby shop up in Ealing, burning a furniture store down in Croydon, the list goes on. The breaking into banks shows the sheer lack of intelligent thought behind the actions.

We don't really need the army out, what we need is a really hard, prolonged spell of rain and you'll see the feeling of "being oppressed and disadvantaged" vanish in minutes.

Mornington Crescent in two

Just heard that one the girls I work with was assaulted on her way home in Ealing last night. Her husband was hit over the head with a brick and her baby nephew was cut with glass, both are still in hospital, she has minor cuts and bruises.

What kind of scum does that!

I'm with you on this, anyone looting should be shot on sight. I look forward to the day when the Metropolitan Police can go back to being a 'force' rather than a service. Not likely to happen with all the liberal, lefty do-gooders around though.

oooh, sweet! If we're shooting people can we start with those named after stinky fruit? Or do we have to co-ordinate death lists?

Clapham Junction looking pretty ok. People turning up to work as usual, and the Council doing a fine job of sweeping up.

well, at the risk of adopting a tone known in sociological circles as 'Airborne Simian', the best you can say for these kids is that they've bought in to the general 'I see it, I want it and I'm going to have it' ethos that gave us a banking crisis and the M25. Where you place it in the scale of things is hard to work out.

One thing that strikes me is the confidence of the police. They seem to be frank in admitting that they can't respond sufficiently quickly to every disturbance, but they are saying that they're going to catch people in the end. Maybe time will prove them right
