Question to you and others...

Is there any example in theory or history where rioting isnt an indicator of societal unrest (whether that be politcal, economic or social)?

In other words, is there ever any justification for 'they're just feckless scumbags" (as per the Daily Mash link ^ )

Plenty of football related ones.

You may have a point there....

Get the farmers in with a full tank of slurry and a sprayer. I reckon not many rioting chavs will stick around once that lot starts raining down on them - after all, no use looting JJB Sports if all that new gear will get covered in shite.

It's interesting that you call them 'Chavs'. Perhaps they are indeed the 'untermenschen'?

Nope they're- Skangers - Neds - Spides - Scallies - Chavs ..dependent on your locality .. maybe we need a ranking system of the 'dis-enfranchised' 'dis illusioned'..

One of our techs just got word from her 15 year old kid that it is going to kick off in Camden again tonight. Warren Street is already boarded up, as are several local roads. Several people have been hauled off their bikes at the end of the road we work on in Camden (Royal College Street) opposite the overground station.

There's more unrest brewing in Lewisham and Deptford already.
Greenwich is shutting and boarding up shops.

When people know in advance to this degree that widespread violence and vandalism is going to occur but are powerless to prevent it then the system is no longer functioning and the people who are identifiable need to picked up and chastised. I am not [normally] an advocate of an eye for an eye but unless people fear the consequences of their actions then in the short-term nothing can or will change.

Also it could be seen as domestic terrorism.

I blame the parents... that isn't meant to be glib, I do blame the parents, and quite probably the parents' parents.

As I am the mother of a 17 & 19 year-old, I believe that "I" am the parent to blame. Not literally of course. I have been saying this a while now to whoever would listen - my generation did not behave in the way that today's teenagers do, so what have we done so badly that has let our children down in such a terrible way? What has happened to make the kids of the 60's & 70's such bad parents today?

I don't have an answer, but the bottom line is that my children have been raised to have a moral compass and are able to identify what is right and what is wrong - what excuse do the parents of these rioters have for not doing that for their kids too?
