This shopping centre. It's just opposite St Paul's. I'd be amazed if at least several of the restaurants weren't open.

On Oyster cards - the fare from zone 6 to zone 1 is £5.70 each way for cash. It's £3.00 each way with an Oyster card. The Oyster card costs £3.00.

So you paid £11.40 each. If you'd got an Oyster card you would have paid £9.00 each - the difference is enough for a beer in Wetherspoons.

If there's anyone reading this who doesn't have an Oyster card yet and thinks there's the sniff of a chance they'll visit London in the next few years - invest £3.00 now. You know it makes sense.

Cost was £8.70 ea but i take your point about the card and will look into it, thanks.

It's like anywhere - if it's an unfamiliar place and you don't do a bit of web research first, you may get stuck. As others have said, there are plenty of really nice places open on a Sunday within 5-10 mins walking distance.

I was just talking to my neighbour who told me that from July you'd need a credit card to use a bus. After a quick look online, the unscrambled version it that you can also use a contactless credit, debit or cash card to pay as well as a pay-as-you-go one. This appears to mean that you can get Oyster rates without having signed up. If I've got this right, it's good for visitors.

EDIT: I just realised I'd forgotten to post a link....http://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/contactless/is-contactless-for-me#on-this-page-0

To be fair, most of the city is shut over the weekend as its mostly open for Mon-Fri businesses. Go to the west end at the weekend and its lively, go to the city during the week and its lively. You can't expect places to stay open when no punters are around.
