10 years ago I had the very real pleasure of riding both ways through the Queensway Tunnel (the original part of the Mersey Tunnel) at the start and end of an organised 100-miler. It was closed to vehicle traffic, and the ventilation was and is so good that there were no fumes. It was a wonderful experience and now a great memory. I used to go through it frequently in a car as a child and young driver, and my mother had walked through it on her 19th birthday on the very day it was opened by King George V, 18 July 1934.
