Hello All,
Has anyone any idea how to convert a 5 figure reference to 6 ? Would 52.399N 03.681w just need a 0 adding on to the end of each figure ? or do I need to add it else where ? Grid ref for my GPS and The Hug mapping site don't match.

Thanks all

5 fig is standard lat/long co-ordinates, 6 fig is British National Grid (used on OS maps etc). You have to convert them using something like this

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. I had just presumed my GPS was set up in Long/Lat, I'll have to have a look in the settings to see if I can set it to long/lat to match the system my mapping software uses.

Cheers.

My Garmin Etrex certainly has such an option. I have it set to give OS grid references. I thought it would be useful if I ever had to call out the emergency services and I needed to tell them exactly where I was.

Just tried the convetor but It seems to come up with figures that make no sense at all ? the mapping software gives two figures os grid and what I presumed to be long lat at 5 figures my gps or phone takes nearly the same long lat but with one number missing off each. Hope that makes sense ?

Grid references consist of two letters (L) and 10 digits (D) in the following format LL DDDDD DDDDD, but the digits in the corresponding Lat/Long are completely different ,there is no comparison.
You may have to convert the letters to digital form, this website should help you do that
http://digimap.edina.ac.uk/webhelp/os/gazetteer_plus/grid_ref_conversion.htm

There are four ways of defining the same position on the map
Example, OS grid ref NO 42821 11326, becomes 342821 711326, which is equivalent to 56.29018 -2.9253347 and equiv. to 56.29018N 2.9253347W

Actually there are more than four ways, but four is enough for just now!

Still making no sense a point on the map using the Hug online mapping gives me 52.555n -2.124w using snorri's grid ref finder I get 52.554545n -2.1243772w one appears as a shorter version of the other ( there may be a slight difference due to where I pointed the mouse) . Any way I'm off now for a couple of days Trekking in the Breacon Beacons I think I'll stick to following an OS map rather than a GPS . I've used the GPS in the past for routes on well diffined paths and a bit of Geocaching but until I can work out the difference between the two figures the maps the best bet. Any more help appreciated.

The accuracy/precision that you need will depend on what you're using it for.

For example 52.555N is expressed to the nearest 0.001 of a degree, which is about 120 yards, whereas 52.554545N is to the nearest 0.000001 of a degree i.e. about 4 inches.

Thanks User9609 much appreciated I wasn't sure if it was as easy as adding a figure on the end of lon/lat to get a 6 figure ref from a 5 figure ref. My device expects a 6 figure ref (I had it set for geocaching)
