Thinking of a tour of the Netherlands next July. In order to spend more time cycling abroad rather than getting to the port we would drive there and leave the car somewhere around Hook of Holland/Rotterdam area.

So has anyone done anything similar or recommend somewhere to leave the car for a week. Paying for secure parking is not an issue.

It is not the answer to the question you are asking - I live around 30miles north of where I assume you would be starting - If Im taking the Harwich boat on a Friday night I leave home just before 6pm - I can get to the port with 2hrs to spare by train - bit of a faff - to Euston easy - a short ride to Liverpool street - find lift that is working - train to port - kill time in the station (no point in hanging around on draughty port side for too long)

It's just earlier to take the car with 2 of us. No hassle on the way back, just get in an behind in under 2 hours after docking or if going by Eurotunnel just drive off.

On arriving at the Hook after taking the ferry from England last month, I was surprised to see Hookers Rugby Club a few miles from the port. http://thehookers.nl/index.php/english/

Would it be worth you contacting them to see if they would mind you parking your car there for the duration of your trip. You could even offer a small cash donation for their junior section, or sponsor the 1st XV's drinking one Saturday.

Being natural-born cyclists. too, I'd not be surprised if they were happy to help you.

Who, me ?
It's not too far from Hook of Holland to Rotterdam airport. I'm sure there will be long term parking there.

Did the same thing a few years ago as it was cheaper to take the car than just the bikes (don't ask why.) I left the car at Den Haag youth hostel where we stayed fist night, they had no problems with leaving it.

We did it a few years ago with about 8 people & bikes
We drove to Harwich and left the vehicle in Harwich, at the local Scout Hut, made a donation, and found one of the Leaders is a Customs officer, and was on duty when we returned.

Which hostel was it that you stayed at? There seems to be a few.
