just gone to remove the above pedals from my wife's bike but an 8mm key and a pedal wrench just don't seem to do the trick.

They were the perfect tool for my Shimanos.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Try harder, they're always difficult after being used for a while, you may benefit from a longer hex key.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Put some copper grease on the Keo threads before you put them back on and you won't have any trouble next time, and use a 'long' allen key.

A good way to remove really tight pedals is to set the crank horizontally with the chosen tool fitted so that it's as close as possible to alongside the crank with it's head near the BB centre then straddle the bike and stand on the tool. Obviously the crank needs to be forwards so that your foot is exerting torque towards the rear of the bike.
