The same man who said that the Hebden Bridge had only had a handful of bikes hired in a year told me that quite a few people had spotted them when leaving the station and had come back in to enquire about them, only to leave empty-handed when told about the registration scheme..

That's the same reason I haven't got around to renting a brompton at Didcot despite it being cheaper and faster than taking a taxi.

I did eventually get a Boris Bike key which is 1000000x better then the slow and unreliable credit card system. But offering both helped me get started.

This. I don't think registration is a problem, but pre-registration is. It helps massively if people can register on the spot, similar to the wildly popular schemes in London, Bordeaux and so on.
