I've been cycling on the roads with my Saracen Mantra 1 19" Cross Country Mountain Bike and looking for a decent road bike now. Any advice of any good stores, and particular brand I should be looking for? My budget is around £400-700

My average cycling speed is around 28-30KPH for 20 miles on this mountain bike, and I'm assuming road bikes can move faster on the road?

Thanks!

25-30kph is pretty damn quick for an MTB. If your employer will allow it look up www.cyclescheme.co.uk or google up 'cycle to work'. That will get you a list of your local stores who will be able to get you a 43% discount and interest free credit for 18months. You'll be able to have a bike up to £1000 in value unless your employer is a credit broker - then you can go up to £5k. Yee ha!

It is a fair lick on a mountain bike and I thought I was doing well to have got mine up to about 16mph, 17.5 if I am feeling up for it. I am hoping that this will stand me in good stead to switch to a road bike when Spring is on the horizon and the roads are a little drier and less leafy!
I watch this thread with interest, cause I reckon my budget will fall in the same bracket.

How about the tyres? When looking for a road bike in particular, should I be looking for really thin tyres?

If you seach up a Saracen Mantra 1 19" Cross Country MTB, the tyres are really thick and they are very smooth on the road.

Really thin tyres, like 23mm, are used on racing bikes. There is a trade off between speed and comfort, basically the narrower the tyre, the faster but less comfortable the ride will be. So you need to decide whether you want an all out racer or an audax style bike. Audax and touring bikes commonly have the option for fitting mudguards.

So decide whether you would rather have a specialised racing bike or a more versatile one.
