Why not go oldschool : maps and compass.
I'll get one of these for sure if I can find a UK supplier.
I ordered mine from DX.com (link above) as I figured it was worth the risk considering the price. It come from Hong Kong in about 10 days and paid nothing extra.

I have been an iphone gps, but i've been charging it from an Anker battery pack, 10,000 mah. I got seven and a half charges out of one big charge on it, so it lasted me almost three days wih fairly heavy use.
