It would appear that our Matthew_T has applied for a provisional driving licence . I am looking forward to seeing clips of all those reckless cyclists around Prestatyn on the learner drivers circuits, with Matthew leaning out the car window and telling them to "get off the road coz you don't pay road tax".

Just having a wee laugh Matthew ;) . I am sure you will do fine and pick it up easily as you will have the benefit of already having road sense through your cycling. You will also benefit from seeing road use from "the other side". Good luck with the driving lessons, and remember to keep us updated (as if you wouldn't!).

The plan is to possibly do a month or two driving my mums car on weekends and then I will start lessons with Gavroche (fellow CCer) when I have finished the college year.
Hopefully I will have my license mid-summer and then I dont plan on having a car until I have the funds and I have finished my degree. Also, if I get the license now, in two or three years when I probably do get a car, the duration of license will cause insurance to drop a bit (hopefully).

Why bother with driving a car.
The next logical and best step is to ride a motorbike. 125 at start due to darn law but soon a supermoto.
That's what im doing anyhow.
Look at this sexy beast. Its going to be my first to take my motorbike virginity(hmm sounded better in my head )

Didnt a provisional used to allow you to ride a 50cc moped? I looked on the DVLA website and that isnt the case anymore.

I did put it to my parents a while ago about getting a moped but my mother wouldnt allow it. Even though I have done higher speeds on my bike!

IMO,

In now way should you drive your mums cars without at least 5 lessons unless you intent do drive on industrial estates after hours.

Having full control of the car is obviously of the utmost importance and with out the back of the dual brakes of a driving instructor, you could be an accident waiting to happen.

Aside from that you need the basics to be taught correctly, all experienced drivers pick up bad habits, nothing worse than having to unlearn bad habits from incorrect teaching, in the long term it could cost you more in driving lessons

Its car parks and the such that I intend to drive on. I need to get used to starting and stopping the car first. My mum is a good driver (IMO) and I think that she is the better person to learn with (patience etc).

I have watched loads of videos on YT from approved driving instructors and institutions and I would hope that I know quite a bit already, it is just putting it into practice now.

And then arrives the quote from the insurance company. An 18 year old won't be cheap. My niece pays over 3k for a lupo worth less than a grand

Having attempted to take my sister out and teach her how to drive after she had several lessons, i do also advise that you get lessons from an instructor before going on the road. The duel brakes are very much required with an inexperienced driver who will not know what to do in panic situations, which as an inexperienced driver will come at points that most of us would not.
