I seem to remember reading some anecdotal evidence that 60% of drivers only ever look at what they can see through the rectangle of their windscreen - even when they are manoeuvring.

Yep you are probably right....... most don't even look properly......

It's just sooooo easy to drive a car these days..... I have a sofa extension too, TBH it's better equipped than the house....... but....I ride the bike to work.....

So many new cyclists have no idea - I nearly rammed two or three this week, just popped onto the road from the pavement..... no checking what was coming.... car or 80 kg's of flesh at 20 plus mph...

Rant off - it's Friday night.....

... Quite frightening that the driver cannot see the "man down" directly in front ...

I'm not convinced that I would see a 'man down' that close to the front bumper of my car either. Obviously I should see it as I walk around the car to get in and/or should see it as I approach. But in an artificial test of 'man down' in orange area in front of stationery vehicle then probably not seen. Like most these days, I can't see the very front edge of the bonnet while sitting correctly - and I'm 5' 10" and drive a fairly small 2 seater. I think it's slightly worse when I drive a pool Scenic.
