Well Mrs F has lost her engagement ring and her 'new' wedding ring (still has the original).

Looks like she hid the rings in some socks when we had a load of teens around. We;ve snce completely re-done our bedroom and she thinks she threw the socks away a few weeks ago,

Could probably find the bank transaction and speak to the jewlers for the new wedding ring (bought 3 years ago), but the engagement ring, no chance, talking 28 years ago.

We've got photos, but how do you get a valuation. Could easily go back to the jewlers as both rings were from them.

Is this for an insurance claim? If so, read the policy documents really carefully. Talk to the claims department and you'll get an idea of what is needed as regards proof of purchase etc.

Yep, insurance.... It's the engagement ring that's going to be tricky. I should have a valuation from when we got it.

She is obviously very upset.

We have almost got it written in our wills that all contents of the sock and underwear draws are to be checked before disposal just in case anything is stashed inside socks etc etc

Hope all goes well @fossyant

Im not sure why you would do that. It seems an odd thing to say. What sort of people do you let in your house?

She is paranoid about it. We didn't know all the teens, but they were fine. Her mum used to put stuff in odd places after they lost a lot of sentimental jewelry in a break in, and my wife has picked it up from her mum. She wasn't wearing them as her fingers were swollen, so put them in the sock drawer.

Today's job is to speak to the insurance and see what they say.

Why would you throw clean socks away, I'd get at least one last wear out of them before binning.

If as you say both rings were at the jewellers a short time ago, it might be worth going in with the original receipt, explain what has happened, they might (for a fee) be prepared to make an appraisement, the actual jeweller who was working on it may remember it.

When it comes to replacements why not commission a student at the local tech college jewellery course to make you an all-in-one ring that fits, to your own design? Mrs Gti and I did this for her wedding ring, which cost £200. She told me not to bother with a ring because she knew I would wreck it climbing or doing DIY or something.

Insurance company OK with it. We have a choice of a specialist jewelers to get us something as close as possible, or vouchers. Going to see what they can do. Have found bank transaction from December 14 for the Wedding ring, but engagement ring around 27/28 years old. I have trawled one drive and have 3 good photos of both rings, dating back 5 years !

It can be very upsetting. When my wife died her wedding ring vanished. She was not wearing any rings when taken to hospital so logically it had to be in the house. It was last seen a few days before her stroke on the usual place on a small side table with her other usual rings. Since then zilch. Every pocket and hem on her clothing was checked as well as handbag etc. Even down the side of her chair and underneath furniture. I cannot believe a carer filched it but the suspicion remains.
