Loud car exhausts (and a general rant about boy racers).

it's the same around here, plus there's the other problem

Cars which have (presumably) permanently illuminated instrumentation, so for some reason, they presume that if they're on, all lights are on, but they're going around with no vehicular lights on at all

Last week, I saw 2, they passed me, & got caught up in traffic, so in both cases I knocked on drivers window, & pointed it out
"I didn't know" was the answer in both cases
My responding thoughts (but unspoken) were;
How come you didn't realise that the car in front of you didn't have its backend lit up by your headlights??, aren't you paying any attention to the road, or your surroundings??

As for the initial noise issues, that opened the thread, we have an issue at times, as do other areas countrywide, with motorbikes (I'll use the description loosely, as they're powered 2-wheelers, even if they look like they've escaped from a skip) that have bugger all exhaust, doubtless with unlicenced/uninsured riders
There was a regular, who loved to goad the Police, & would often ride like an idiot down the main road, which around here has a large industrial estate & a motorway junctions, so lots of trucks '24/7'
I saw this kid a few months ago, trying to use one of his regular routes, through the gates into a local Cemetary
Rather fortunately, he misjudged it, or maybe the gate had swung slightly closed, & he clipped the gate, smacked into the stone gate-pillar & went down
The screams were even louder than his heap of scraps non-existant exhaust pipe......................................

Conversely, there was a Vauxhall VXR8 locally too (now sold & gone elsewhere), that had the 6.0litre (Corvette) engine in it
Now that was an exhaust note, that sounded g-o-o-d:wub::notworthy:
I only commute seven miles each way to work and i actually lose count how many motorists drive without lights ! They all have the nice daylight running front lights which also light up the dash, but they are so reliant on the technology they are now driving that they have forgotten to switch the full set on ! With cars becoming more and more clever, drivers are actually becoming dumber !

That must be a Manchester thing, as drive without lights around here and you would end up in a deep water filled ditch very quickly.

I must add I do about 35,000 miles a year and come across way more lighting defects as in not working than I see as too bright.

Enlighten me, how do you tell an illegal bulb from a legal one. We have 4 cars here and the headlights are different on all of them.

Now the cars with no lights on the offside is a bad one.
I mean the legally fitted HID systems we see an many new cars, they have a self leveling system which is all good when you behind that steering wheel but the constant up and down movement of the headlamp adjusting its level blind oncoming motorists,i cannot be the only one who thinks those lights are burning my retina's ! Then we have the little chav tastic brigade who have thumbed through the catalogue to fit yet more crap to their £20 hatchback and thought lets fit super bright lamps not originally fitted back in the day and make my shed look modern ! They should be ripped apart at MOT time....if they get an MOT that is ! My old crusty is fitted with old tech H4 headlamp bulbs, they do the job well because i use my eyes to see where i am going and am not trying to blind every one else on the road,my wifes car has slightly more modern H7 bulbs, again old tech and doing the job perfectly !

Even worse....Bolton ! I take it you are from an area where street lighting is nil but full of nice green farmland ^_^ I was driving across the fens on Saturday and the roads there are interesting to say the least, very lumpy and like you say, nice big car swallowing ditches to keep you on your toes

It seems that loud exhausts have once again become the "must have" accessory for acne infested boy racers trying to impress the pants off the opposite sex.

I live in a short street and they seem to delight in turning into it, then foot to the floor for all of the 200 yard length of the street without changing out of first gear, before an emergency stop at the give way.

Anti-social nobbers, especially at 3am on a Sunday!
I will be trying to get registration numbers of those responsible for the information of our non existent local Police. I am sure their insurance companies would be interested too.

Take heart that at some time in the next two years one of their friends, or perhaps they themselves, will have killed themselves in a car accident, perhaps taking a few fellows with them. And they will be miserable and unable to comprehend how it happened.

Or, noise cancelling head phones.

Sometimes you might think you have it bad with boy racers and noise, but it could always be worse....

Don't get me started on lights!
You see all combinations - from no lights to Christmas trees. My pet hate is the sidelights with front fogs combo.. WTF? If it's dark use dipped headlights you nobber.
As for daytime running lights as required on newer cars, why didn't they hardwire BACK lights to come on as well? Now you get a lot of cars running about at night with front lights on, but drivers oblivious to the fact that they have no lights to the rear.

Apply your brains before turning the key you thick motons!

EU legislation so pedestrians can see cars coming towards them and reduce issues in 20mph areas where it's harder to judge speed of a vehicle or if it's even moving at all
should have bought a decent car then. Her Volvo V40 has the rears on at same time as the DRL , and when the light level changes to dark enough the DRLs switch off and the dipped beams come on. same time as the dash changes colour too.
Volvos are different, the lights coming on automatically has been a thing for years

I dislike the side lights and 'fog lights' combination as a high kerb or crash barrier can make a car all but invisible on the approach to a junction / roundabout as the lights are now too low and view blocked by road furniture.

What about those that find the adjustment dial and think "oww great! I can point the lights further up and see much more, that's bound to be safer". And why do cars with the 'double circle' type lights where I guess the outer one is the side light or dipped light e.g. Lots of Mercedes, seem to shine directly in my face like a full beam. And don't get me started on vans, SUVs and minicabs light aim.

The adjustment dial when at it's highest point should be how the car left the factory. The dial is there to lower the lights when you've got a load in or towing, both activities that sit the back of the car down pointing the lights up, the dial compensates for this.
