I must be the world's worst when it comes to 'visualising' schemes ie carpet, wallpaper, curtains etc. My wife was good but I am on my own now.
The situation........
I have a small lounge, maybe 5 mtr x 4 mtr. The front wall is maybe 2/3rds patio door (overlooking the garden) so has plenty of light PLUS decent LED lighting.
Anyway, it's very tired. So I am having it fully decorated plus new carpet.
Note:- adjacent to the patio doors are cream curtains and a set of cream vertical blinds.
Paint will remain white.
Carpets & curtains need choosing and co-ordinating.
I am knocking on so nothing too modern.
FOR SOME REASON I have graphite/grey carpet in mind.....very 'drastic' for me.
Has anyone else got similar ?
Anyone got thoughts on it ?
Thanks

Sounds ok, darker the better.

While grey might be the ‘sensible’ colour, it could make the space ‘cold’ in winter. Would something in a ‘patio/garden muck’ colour be prudent? Or a warmer colour with a large, washable rug in front of the patio doors?

My mum always swore by a multi-coloured carpet, as it hid a multitude of sins (sins not detailed on legal advice).

What's you current colour scheme?

We had a Wilton, for many years in colour "A". We really liked it, but after about 20 years, it began to wear, so we replaced it. So when we changed it, we felt we had to go for a different colour, so we chose colour "B". Although we do like the new colour, we remember fondly the old colour "A" and when we change again, will probably go back to the original colour "A".

What I'm trying to say is, you don't need to go for a new colour scheme, just because you are buying new carpets. If you really liked the old colour scheme, no problem with keeping the old colour again.

We do have a various shades of grey living room - wife's choice - but I don't have any pictures of it on my phone at the moment. Will try to post some once I get home so you can see what it looks like.

Front bedroom is grey it is beautiful. Our living room walls are a sort of pale herb green emulsion, ceiling is a butter cream sort of colour along with butter cream woodwork,so the carpet square in the shop stood out and looked great, now in and full size for me it does not work, the skirting board of butter cream is too much of a contrast, skirting should have been pale herb green and it would have flowed if you get my meaning. But at 75 i now don't give a shoot.

SOunds nice, but I find most carpets of that type and colour have lighter or even white flecks in them. It does look better than one plain colour. But I would not hesitate to fit a nice graphite carpet if it has a decent shag height.

When I lived on my own, I had a smallish lounge which I wanted to decorate. I got a brown (slightly flecked) carpet, a dark blue feature wall and the rest was bright tropical bird wallpaper. Lots of people said "it'll bring the room in", or "it'll be too dark". I take all those comments with a pinch of salt. If you have a window and/or lights, it will be bright enough. And as for "making the room look smaller", well unless the walls actually start closing in, you're not losing any space. And you get used to the various light levels in your home anyway. Just like when we had our conservatory plastic roof replaced with tile and batten, it made the kitchen a bit darker but we got used to it, and it's got LED lights anyway

My bedroom carpet is at home mid-ish grey, and is OK.

On the one hand it's neutral so goes with most stuff, on the other it has the potential to look a bit cold.

I'd also caution you against too little colour in the room as a whole - while I used to like the understated nature of monochrome colour schemes, looking back on when this was popular in the early 2000s typically it's aged really badly; with most setups looking cold and cheap.

Personally when I eventually have furniture I'll be going for an earth tones theme with browns, beiges, burnt oranges, wood and other natural colours.. were I doing the carpet I think I'd probably go for a mid-dark brown.
