Well, the Boys Toys smells always grab me, and thank you for the reminders.

Also...

Steam trains
.303 shells coming out of the breech
Tarmac
Sea caves
Glow plug exhaust
Bonfires
Knocked up plaster
Machine tool coolant
Dennis ride-on mowers
Newspapers
Ski shops

Also..the faintly peppery smell of a new-born baby. Magic.

BTW, whatever happened to The Great Smell of Brut????

the smell of rain after humidity, then the subtle difference after the rain stops
smell of my cat -miss her - i know how you feel BOAB
clothes that have dried outside in the air and sun
the smell of a loved ones skin
the smell of a delicious home cooked meal wafting in the kitchen
the smell of newly burnt out wax candles
smell of books and certain print catalogues/magazine-that wonderous print and paper combo
fresh jasmine flowers- that greeny floral hint, not that overconcentrated floral burst you get in synthetics- korres shower gel is a great reproduction of the scent
a fresh frangrant sweet pea- my favourite flowers
night scented stock wafting in the evening through an open window
the smell of freshly turned slightly damp soil
cut grass
vetiver, frankincense, patchouli, orange blossom, vanilla, oakmoss

if we're talking about perfumes - chanel no 5 - the parfum concentrate not the eau's as they don't have the same formulation
Amaranthine from Penhaligon - the spicy start/top notes is not to my liking but it mellows out into a hint of spice with mid and base notes of banana leaf, vanilla and green tea- floral yet sweet.
Estee Lauder -pleasures - floral, light and refreshingly green top notes

Strangely enough I don't wear perfume very often as I like 'natural' skin scent on myself and others

Can go on forever- the sense of smell is so important and so tied in with the experiencing of everyday and the extraordinary - pinch your nose and try and eat a cube of apple and pear and discern the difference between them- quite difficult to.

Or try drinking a good beer straight out of the bottle, then pour it into a glass and see what a difference there is in the taste when you can smell it.

I once skied the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt on touring skis. You spend a week living at altitude in mountain refuges and the only smells are yourself and your companions; everything else is just rock and snow. At the end of the week we skied down under the north face of the Matterhorn and into the top of the Zermatt ski area. Suddenly we started coming across smells of ordinary valley life, a steaming dung heap, a freshly creosoted gable end, cigarette smoke, perfume, cooking smells. After a week of smelling nothing our noses were clear and the intensity of the smells was astonishing. We had lunch then took the cog-train down into the valley and another train back to Geneva. It was spring and the windows were open and the smells of the countryside drifting in, I remember the smells of the blossoms we passed, it was an extraordinary olfactory experience and made me realise how much we ignore the daily smells around us. I will never forget the feelings of elation at having finished the Haute Route combined with those smells.
