We just got buzzed by two F15's screaming over. They are proper loud! One was doing a hard banked turn. On a sunny evening like this seeing these appear over the hill and disappear down the valley there are few more impressive sights. I could watch them all day. Those guys must have one of the best jobs in the world.

I hate when they fly overheard as the noise scares the bejesus out of me.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
We get them flying low a lot as I live in the foothills of the Cambrian mountains, it is ideal terrain for them to train at dog fighting. We also get chinook helicopters and enormous transport planes, sometimes flying in 2's or 3'. They also do night maneuvers. Sometimes they are less than 200 above ground level. Now that is seriously trouser changing times. They have flown so low at times that I have even waved to, them, as they pass

Jets are buggers when they are on the ground though. I was once in the group playing enemy at RAF Wildenrath while in the Army . I found two Phantoms taxiing and shot the pilots and the umpire said that they had to go away and be dead for an hour. When they turned the things round I got knocked off my feet by the blast from the engines. I reckon that was just sour grapes for getting shot.

Often see them heading over to Otterburn from my house or to Newcastle Airport with some sort of mechanical emergency .. I remember the three Jaguars flying very low in formation over Carlisle race course, just as I'd finished checking the girths of 24 horses in flat race before loading them in the stalls... Munchkins laid out (Stalls handlers name for jockeys) and horses scattered in all directions

Well Jell. I grew up watching Lightnings, then Jaguars blasting over my head. I miss the cold war!
Oh yes, they were the days...
Circa 1970, I'd be about 12, and woke up on a disused airbase to the most thunderous roar...Harriers :hyper: hovering just above the treetops, maybe 500 yards away (the married quarters were still in use..right on the edge of the airbase)...all day they were roaring about, there was a big excercise on, soldiers milling around etc etc.
Fast forawrd to maybe 15 years ago, driving alongside Wittering airbase, sunroof open...as a Harrier slowlycame overhead, about 50 ft right above me, coming into land. Thunderous..just made you grin, grimace, eyes popping noise...brilliant.
Maybe 20 years ago I was on the phone to mum Who lived about 2 miles away. The Red Arrows flew over, low and fast . I said to mum...':rolleyes:The Red Arr.......' and before I got any further..she said 'oooh there's planes just gone overhead, really low'...theyd flown about 2 miles in seconds.

Jaguars, Harriers, Phantoms, Lightnings, Vulcans, Jet Provosts, Bucaneers, even U-2 spyplanes, A10 Warthogs, the list goes on and on. The good old days are long gone (I am showing my age now) Although i do see US Apaches and heavy attack helicopters, low and fast quite often in Cambridgeshire, theyalways raise a grin.

Most impressive low flying I saw was in Wales. I was on Milestone Buttress, looking along Llyn Ogwen towards Ogwyn Cottage. The valley gets quite narrow there, between Y Garn and Pen-y-Ole-Wen. A Hercules came along low level and stood on its wing tip to get through the gap.

Not as noisy as your average fast jet, but the sight of such a large lumbering thing being flown like that was awesome.

And when I was in my teens we lived in Malta for 3 years. In those days there was only a chain link fence separating the end of the runway from the road around the airfield. When a squadron of phantoms or similar were visiting, we used to go along and sit on the wall just outside the fence, waiting for them to land just overhead.

Hercules' are a great sight.

Last year we were sat at St Mary's Loch near Moffat when a loud droning was followed by a low flyer that was so slow it was amazing it stayed up.

Going up and down the M74 you often see military aircraft low flying, and yesterday I was buzzed by a rescue helicopter on the M6 near Shap.

It was that low that my boss could hear it on the other end of the phone.
