Well Jell. I grew up watching Lightnings, then Jaguars blasting over my head. I miss the cold war!
Oh yes, they were the days...
Circa 1970, I'd be about 12, and woke up on a disused airbase to the most thunderous roar...Harriers

hovering just above the treetops, maybe 500 yards away (the married quarters were still in use..right on the edge of the airbase)...all day they were roaring about, there was a big excercise on, soldiers milling around etc etc.
Fast forawrd to maybe 15 years ago, driving alongside Wittering airbase, sunroof open...as a Harrier slowlycame overhead, about 50 ft right above me, coming into land. Thunderous..just made you grin, grimace, eyes popping noise...brilliant.
Maybe 20 years ago I was on the phone to mum Who lived about 2 miles away. The Red Arrows flew over, low and fast . I said to mum...'

The Red Arr.......' and before I got any further..she said 'oooh there's planes just gone overhead, really low'...theyd flown about 2 miles in seconds.
Jaguars, Harriers, Phantoms, Lightnings, Vulcans, Jet Provosts, Bucaneers, even U-2 spyplanes, A10 Warthogs, the list goes on and on. The good old days are long gone (I am showing my age now) Although i do see US Apaches and heavy attack helicopters, low and fast quite often in Cambridgeshire, theyalways raise a grin.
