Not military I know but when I was a kid round about 1967 my mum was on the phone to a relative and Concorde flew over on a test run, I guess this was back when they could go supersonic over land.
We heard the sonic boom and it was quite loud and all looked out the window with mum still on the phone. Then a couple of seconds later they heard the same about 25 miles away.
I can remember this being re-told to everyone they met for the next week.

I'm not surprised..... The first flight was in 1969!! :giggle:

It is a bit of an odd thing that in 1914 we had crude planes of string and wood but just 50 years later we had supersonic planes and Jumbo jets carrying hundreds of people around the world.
Now 50 years on, things really have not moved on to any great degree since then.

Stop it, I'm in a foul enough mood at the Human Race as it is right now!!
Against who?
And what are they defending exactly?? Rampant Obesity, Pound Shops and dog sh*t??

Really, the older I get, the less and less impressed I become with this crappy wee country. We are a nation obsessed with the weather, and which every second advert on the telly is for car or house insurance.... Heck, you could probably replace the Queen with a couple of fictional Meerkats and large swathes of the population would rejoice!!

Wave yer little flags and tell us how great Great Sh*tain is then..........

Anybody remember the public information films from the 70s showing a Phantom firing up it's engines in a hanger - "The Sound Of Freedom"

No, because all the poor sods who just happened to be in the Hangar at the time emerged with bleeding ears and never heard anything ever again!!
And if we hadn't had probably the finest fighter plane in the world at the time we could have lost our country. And that in itself is good reason to continue having the best planes and the best pilots.
..... The Hurricane??

Seriously, the more people who froth and dribble over the S******e, the more I prefer the Hurricane!!

Annyway, yes, I remember seeing a Nimrod doing bumps up at RAF Kinloss.
The noise of one of those old Comets was fairly impressive, and I'm glad I experienced it!!
I also watched Tornados taking off from Lossiemouth and were flying so low a pilot waved to me!!

I've also seen various other aircraft doing bumps at Prestwick including a Herc along with commercial aircraft such as a DHL '757, Ryanairs and other airlines like Aer Lingus, etc.

welsh dragon

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I knew I should have kept quiet yesterday when I spoke about night time manoeuvres. About 10.00 pm last night, there was a roaring sound, and a jet flew overhead.

that's the first time they have done night time flying for around 12 months.

Berties

Fast and careful!
My house is equal distance from RAF Boscombe down and AACC Middle Wallop and they hardly ever fly my direction ,
The best low flying I get to see is off Old Harry's rocks close to Swanage and the surrounding coast the Special Boat Service going through their drills they will parachute to the sea from Hercules or drop ribs from the backs of chinnocks, very impressive to see
