Will I make it home ?

Had meeting at another site, so rode 12 miles in on a banana and a cup of tea, and one full bidon

In meeting, snaffled 6 biscuits over the course of the morning, and two cups of coffee. Meeting finishes late, got another meeting 5 miles away, no time for lunch. 1/2 bidon and back to office.

Nothing left in the canteen, so grabbed a packet of crisps, a mars bar and a bottle of fresh orange.

So I'm planning on riding home the long way - 20 miles.

At what mileage point do you think I'll be in the gutter having blown up/bonked ? If I make it home it will be 37 for the day - having had no breakfast or lunch

You'll be fine - just buy another mars bar.

Thinking about it, I have had a bowl of cornflakes, two slices of bread and marmalade, two bananas and half a thin crust tuna pizza. Three or four cups of tea and a biscuit or two.

I've been doing physical building work all day, plus mowed the lawn, planted a shrub and moved 3 large rocks 50 metres. 2 or 3 years ago I'd have been ravenous but I am not even hungry yet. My next job is to move a chest freezer into my van and shift 3 stone troughs up the garden.

I don't do breakfast and my lunch is usually caffeine based+biccys...I do it every day! Strangely enough when i was at uni and i met my girlfriend she said i looked like an auschwitz victim. My commute isn't as long as yours though and my body is used to it after 15 years of practice...i'd feel bloated and lazy if i ate three meals a day.

Since finishing uni and eating 1 square meal a day (admitedly it contains all the calories breakfast+lunch should) I have balooned to a massive 13 stone...god how i miss my slender self.

Ooo! No. Sounds horrible! Hats off that you made it back! I am one of those people who needs to eat regularly or else I quite literally collapse. Back in my early 20's I had a manager who had a "lunch is for wimps" attitude - he would hold meetings that went straight through the lunch break, pretty much challenging anyone to dare to go and have lunch. Ugh! Then I just sat there, meekly feeling godawful. Nowadays I would just tell him I was going for lunch, tough bananas!

For me 32 miles is about the limit for no food only water. Much above that and, while a I can ride on without food, I will then get home and suffer terribly from the munchies, and so end up eating far more than that needed to replace the calories used. I find it better to eat a sandwich or a scone and a piece of fruit before I get too hungry.

I'm one that needs to eat regular. Worse is if busy doing DIY/gardening all day, skip lunch, then I end up physically shaking due to lack of food.

On the bike it is essential you eat properly.

I'm with you on that. A couple of years ago I discovered cycling's Miracle Food - a huge bowl of brown pasta about 30 mins before going out on a ride - make that bowl big enough and I can ride all day on it!

Never mind the "don't do anything for 2 hours after eating", my metabolism is jet-propelled - two hours later is too late! I need it digesting in the ol' stomach while I ride.

Conversely, if I don't much before a ride, I end up literally feeling like I'm going to pass out.

I have friends who "forget to eat lunch". How the hell do you forget to eat lunch?!! By 1pm every cell in my body is screaming for food!
