I've always noticed that when you fit a new chain it only ever seems to need oiled every 200-300miles, and as the chain ages it seems to require oiled more and more frequently.
Last winter with my chain at 1500miles I was getting fed up of it always feeling that it needed some oil, nearly every other day - I generally use the mickle method and use chainsaw oil.
So I packed the whole chain in grease, put the chain between both big cogs to open it up a bit then worked the grease in with my hands, it was a little messy but no where near as messy as I thought it would be - most of the excess grease seemed to accumulate on the lower dérailleur. Since then I have hardly needed to oil the chain, it was just like new again, in fact with the chain now a 2500 miles I think I will do it again.
Chain new = 380.5mm for 15 links
at 2500 = 382mm for 15 links
so i must be doing something right.
But did the grease get inside the links where the lubrication is needed or did you simply suceeed in coating the outside of the chain that needs no lubrication but where grease etc is good at getting muck to stick.
