Lunar events

So did anyone else notice the partial lunar eclipse tonight? I happened to look out and notice the moon looked 'funny'. It also turns out that tonight is a blue moon. So lets hope this is a good omen for 2009!

Noticed the full moon on my way home and thought it a great omen for a good year, or a reason for lots of tomb raiders running about going nuts. apparently there are some witches dancing naked just up the road form you.

We saw it on our way out for a meal tonight. Wasn't a good omen though - when we got to the restaurant, we found the heating had broken and I ended up spending half the evening wearing my coat!

A bit of technical stuff and a digression:

There are many different definitions of a blue moon but the most 'official' one is not the sort of Full Moon that happened tonight, instead it is when there are four full moons in a season (i.e. between March 21 and Jun 21, or Jun 21 and Sept 23, etc. etc). The Blue Moon is then the third of the four. This will happen once next autumn and after that in 2013, but didn't happen in 2009.

But the 'two-in-a-month' has attained wide currency. See also here if you're interested.
