When a 'chain of events' gave some luck

What unlikely 'chain of events' has given you a moment of luck?
I'm not thinking of stories where you've met the love of your life, or escaped some imminent peril - just mundane 'run-of-the-mill' daily life, where you've thought 'Wow, that was a stroke of luck'
Here's mine from today.......
Last week I received a bat 'nesting box' as a birthday present. The advice is to place it 10-12ft from the ground, so I planned to source a piece of steel tube to mount it near the rear corner of my garage/workshop, where we get bats circling our garden from the adjacent field. I made enquiries at a metal supplier in our local town, and they agreed to telephone me with a price. Two days later, they phoned to say they had cut the steel tube, and of course, I pointed out I'd only wanted a price, and I'd now realised it wouldn't fit in our car!
Price subsequently agreed, but carriage remained a problem. I ruled out strapping 9ft of tube to the bike, and although the tube weight was 8kg, I decided I could walk the footpath into town and carry it back the 2.5 miles. The route was a bit muddy on the way, but I'd decided it would be a challenge, and the only solution to getting it home. I arrived at said metal supplier, put my hand in my pocket to extract the £25 payment, only to find I'd put 2 five pound notes in my pocket by mistake! A 1/2 mile walk from the industrial estate into town, and I was able to buy a small item and get £20 cashback using my phone - immediate problem averted. Back at the Industrial Estate, I decided I needed some sustenance at the cafe/snack bar opposite. Outside seating was limited, and I asked a guy if I could join him at his table. We got chatting, and I relayed my tale of woe, to which he said, "I'm going through your village, there's my van, we can put your tube in the back and drop you off". What a great outcome, without my 'money error', our paths would never have crossed, and I'd have struggled all the way home. It was indeed lucky.

I organised a forum ride in 2012 and one of the riders who joined me was @DCLane. We got chatting as we rode along and he told me about some of the big prizes that he had won in competitions. I had entered (and won) a few competitions pre-2000, but had given up doing them after not winning anything for a few years. That chat convinced me that I should start doing them again...

Result...?

About £8,000 in prizes since then!! :becool:

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Some years back I was out for a ride when all of a sudden I found myself sailing along on my arse with my bike sliding along next to me. I picked myself up, checked that no one had seen, picked up my bike ready to continue and found that it had a Pringle-shaped rear wheel. Nearest station was a couple of miles so I prepared to shoulder my bike and set off on a trek.

Just at that moment a guy in a range rover pulled up and asked if I needed help. And here's the serendipitous bit. He was on his way to help someone move house so the back of the vehicle had plenty of space for my bike. What's more he was heading to very near where I live, about 25km away. So I got a luxurious lift (almost) all the way home.

Left something important (can't remember what, but the sort of thing that you don't want to lose) in the back of a taxi taking me from Whitby to Darlington (I think) back in 2019 (hence the sketchy details) desparately trying to catch the train. Made it with minutes to spare.

Turns out he was heading to Birmingham Airport to go on holiday the following week, so met him at the gates at Birmingham New Street Station (changing trains), just a couple of minutes from where I worked, and he handed it back to me.

Chap asked me to cut a hedge urgently as the gardener who was meant to do it kept letting him down. Half way through the job the gardener turned up and gave me lots of abuse and kept threatening me. I just kept moving away and trying to placate him. In the end he gave up and left.
Two days later on a country lane I spotted him trying to thumb a lift as he was broken down in his car. I stopped and offered him a lift to the train station. He asked after a couple of miles if I realised who he was. I pretended not to and then he explained and apologised for his actions.
I kindly insisted on taking him right to the door of the station just to ensure he felt really uncomfortable and then laughed the whole way home after he stumbled out still trying to make amends. What fun.

Nice story, but I must ask: why did you not just pay the metal merchant with your phone?

I was living in a holiday style cabin in the Highlands which was ok and reasonably comfortable but the owner was too much of a mean SOB to do any maintenance...so after some years it was getting bad and only a matter of time before it started leaking or the roof blew off  Anyhow the council had a look and offered me a place the next day! this could only happen if ive been living here for some years and was in urgent need. So thanks to a mean, tight, uncaring landlord i now live a few hundred yards from the sea [Brora] in a comfortable bungalow...can never tell how things might go... :okay:

Not a life changing event, but something that has been a conversation piece and claim to fame for over over 50 years.

One of my old school chums was at one of the London universities in the early 70's and me now living in Kent, was invited to join him in the student bar, on the evening they had bands playing.

Now their social organiser used to write to any celebrity pop star known to be passing through London and invite them to perform at their student bar.

One of these invitees, unexpectedly accepted the invite and I was lucky enough to be there that evening.

The star sang a few songs, then made an exit via the doorway where I was standing. Everybody was shaking his hand as he made his way through the crowd and I too, shook the hand of .....
Stevie Wonder.
And I've never stopped bragging of my claim to fame.
