I suppose this could be in the health & effiency thread ( that was a great magazine wasn't it?)

You may have seen me mention over the last month about how awful I've been feeling. On the May Day weekend I went to the river Wye for the canoe club annual jaunt. On the Saturday whilst having lunch a tick drew blood on my wrist, it wasn't there for long.
At about 8.30 that evening my eyes started to feel gritty, and so was the rest of me. I took myself off to my tent. The next day I was a real old snotty, sneezy, achy mess. It was a battle for the whole day. On the Monday morning I was lying in my tent and the penny dropped.... Lymes disease. The others on the trip assured me I hadn't got it.
Anyway, turns out I have! The symptoms have been a really bad flu (imitation) for a week, headaches, wooziness, aching joints, headaches and zero energy. My blood pressure is quite high too.

If left untreated it can cause all sorts of nasties. Luckily my antibiotics have started to take effect.

Moral of the story? If you're out and about and get a tick bite, even if it's only for a second, get down to the doctors for some drugs, as you don't want to feel the way I've been feeling this month!xx(

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Hope you start to feel better soon. Good luck

I've dug out many ticks when I lived in the Highlands. Off me, off the dog, off the kids, never contracted it. You were unlucky by the sounds of it.

A timely warning for those taking countryside ambles. It's the season. We remove several ticks from our dogs after every walk, and probably miss an equal number.

Lyme's can be serious and because it presents like 'flu, it can be easily misdiagnosed. So it's definitely something to be aware of even if it's not a high risk of incidence... not that that's any consolation to Dave ;)

Glad you got on the antis quickly Dave and hope your feeling better soon.

[QUOTE 3100230, member: 9609"]Bad luck - I hate ticks, used often find them crawling on me while walking and climbing up north, never had one in me but have found them crawling on me many times.
I wonder if it is the tick you seen that passed the disease, they normally have to be established on you for 24-36 hours before they exchange any fluids and hence that is the time the pathogen can get into you. I'm also surprised at how quick the symptoms appeared - I wonder if you have had one on you from a previous time? did you get the bulls eye rash?

Best of luck anyways, a mate had lymmes a few years back and made a full recovery, during the treatment he became over sensitive to sun light and had to stay indoors all summer, he was going out after dark for a walk.

he is one i found crawling up my leg

I may have been bitten before, I dunno!
I didn't get the bullseye rash, that's why my mates said I didn't have it, it turns out that 1 in 3 don't get the rash!
As soon as I informed the doctors they wanted me in that day, they said until we take bloods and get results we don't know what it is, but you're on doxycycline for 3 weeks anyway! And I think that's the key to it, medicate first, ask questions later, cos if you leave it, it gets worse!

Off to Mallorca on Saturday..... Factor 50 at the ready. I may take one of my all in 1 white spraying suits, or my kayaking drysuit to keep the sun at bay!

Removing ticks is a tricky business because the head can separate from the body giving the illusion that you have got it out but the head continues with its dirty work. You need good non pointy tweezers to get as close to the skin as you can and pull the tick out making sure to extract what is beneath the skin not just the juicy bit on top. Once you have it out you throw it on the ground and stamp on it until it is completely obliterated and one more time for your own satisfaction.

I thought I remembered being told not to use tweezers, in case you squeezed, and to use a credit card to sort of scrape it off? Can't remember now, it was several years ago.

Used to go shooting a lot in the forests round here. Got a lot of deer ticks burrowing into me, mates took the p1$$ over my "deery aroma".

Anyway, to cut a long story short, to prevent, I found eating garlic the day before made them feck off (ill pm my tick repellent lemon chicken recipe to them that wants it) and tho get them out if they do attack, letherman needle nose pliers were the best tool.

Sympathise with the op tho. Had a nasty bite and the flu symptoms and was bricking it a couple of years back.

This is timely. I found one on my face last night. Luckily, the dogs started barking and woke me up in time to catch it before it found a desirable spot.

I'm pulling them out of the dogs all the time, but like yello, I'm sure I miss loads.
