My maddest thing was agreeing to go on my first taste of a long forum ride with @ColinJ and a few others to Blackpool.

For some reason I though an overweight 40 yr old that hadn't ridden more than 60 miles before would be ok doing 110 miles!

Damn near killed me :surrender:

Toss up between doing a ride, I've since calculated at approx 75 miles, at the age of 12 without anything in terms of sustenance, puncture repair, money or even a watch so I knew how late it was or the game we used to play. This involved riding the bike as fact as you could before jumping off onto grass at a marked point and seeing how far the bike would travel on its own. Furthest won.

Wouldn't dream of doing the latter today, especially with the bikes I currently own plus a growing sense of my own mortality

Haven't done anything mad on a bike. Compared to quite a few acquaintances I'm distinctly lacking on the insane cycling front. Pompey-London-Felpham-Pompey (twice)? Portsmouth to Swansea? London to Brighton FNR then the DD the following night? London to Brighton then home on an FNRttC and another overnighter on the Saturday? Mere bagatelles compared to LEL/PBP/Transcontinental Race.... Other people are entitled to disagree though...

That was your second maddest thing ...

The maddest thing was getting stuck in, coming on lots of my hilly rides, getting much fitter than me, and then getting bored and giving it up!

Riding around Pompey is enough crazy for me.

Also on another occasion I deliberately rode up the wrong side of the Motorway in the "fast" lane. (On this occasion the Motorway hadn't yet been opened)

I've previously posted a gps trace of my ride along a runway!

Set off to cycle from my home in Shepherds Bush to Oxford one Sunday evening in the late summer. Got as far as Acton before realising I'd forgotten lights. Decided not to turn back and add to what I knew was going to be a long night, and pressed on. An hour or two later I left the outskirts of London to discover it was a completely moonless night, and spent the next several hours riding in a coal cellar. Every now and then a car would pass me, and I'd do my best during the few seconds to memorise where the road went ahead' until I'd be back once again in total blackness, and total ignorance. At one point I came off, to discover I'd managed to cycle into a layby but hit the kerb failing to cycle out. The worst bit was getting to within about 10 miles of Oxford to discover that the A40 merged with the M40, forcing me into a diversion that added about seven or eight miles. I finally arrived at about 2 in the morning, bleeding, shattered, but strangely pleased with myself...

rode through a ford, which turned out to be quite a fast flowing river. I got washed downstream a bit but manage to keep hold of the bike.

Years ago I was cycling back from a river/picnic are with my freind when I got a puncture. We had a spare tube but my wheels weren't quick release and we had no spanner. My friend suggested we stuff moss in my rear rim and it did a fairly good job until I went down a hill at 25mph. The moss was flung into a compressed lump and I cycled the 4 miles home with what felt like square wheels.
