There is a guy called Drummond Money-Coutts, an ex Etonian. He is amazing at close hand card tricks and has loads of stuff on youtube. He did a very good documentary last year about the history of slight of hand card tricks such as the 3 card Monty. It was on National Geographic and is well worth watching to understand the skills involved.

It seems to be forgotten that magicians are illusionists. Everything screened is a set up through misdirection, use of stooges, doctored props, camera angles and sleight of hand - have I missed anything out?
Dynamo is good but not a patch on you.The way you make pies disappear is just amazing.
This is what puzzles me about people who are in-on-it and stooges. Nobody these days can keep there mouth shut and in particular journalists - if a journalist had been in on the trick he would be selling his story to the highest bidder.

Its like the moon landings been filmed in a hollywood set - if they had been, someone who worked on the production would have spilt the beans by now. Same with these magicians, somebody would come forward.
I'm saying nothing

This is my son Nat (the shorter one) and his stage partner. They go by the name of Two Jokers in a Pack.
Available for, well, err - school assemblies and concerts mostly! I think they are really good and I don't know how they do most of the stuff they do!

I always loved Paul Zenon's stuff - especially when he would do some amazing street magic trick which ended with a couple of ladies choosing a can of beans from a supermarket shelf and, once they opened it and fished around inside, the keys to their car were in it; when they turned around in astonishment ... he had gone !

There is a really simple but effective trick I do with the children that foxes most people at first - very simple to do, and easy to teach too a child

The layout:
Get any 9 playing cards - make sure one of them is a 9 (any suit, lets say diamonds)
Look at the pattern of the 9; 4 diamonds on the left, four on the right and one in the middle
Lay the actual playing cards out on the table the same way as the 9 diamonds - to make it easy to follow put the 9 in the middle (like the diamond on its own in the middle of the card), then any four cards in a vertical row on the left and the other four in a vertical row on the right forming the same pattern as the 9 diamonds in the middle of the 9 of diamonds card:
eg

A------5
8------J
---9---
Q------7
6------K

The Trick:
Get someone (the mark) to point to a card while the child isn't looking/is out of the room etc, Lets say they choose the Ace in the example above
Call the child back in.
The key to the trick is to point to a few cards that are not the chosen one asking if this is the card. Its important to physically touch the card
At some point carefully point to the 9 in the centre.
When you do this touch the diamond on the surface of the card that corresponds to the actual card chosen by the mark.
In this example, because they picked the Ace you touch the diamond in the top left of the pattern.
The mark will think you are just identifying the 9 of diamonds (and hear the child say no) while you've just communicated that the actual card is the Ace.

Example - staying with the Ace for now - child comes back in the room, you point to the K and ask Is it this card - child says no. Point to the 9 and ask is it this card - child says no (child now knows its the Ace). Point to the J and ask is it this card - child says no. You can then either point to the A at some time (child says yes) or just ask the child which card it is.
If the mark picks the Q next go, then you point to the diamond third down on the left and so on
If they pick the 9 itself then you have to point to the central diamond and the child simply says yes, its that card.

There are lots of variations of how to do it - we've had hours of fun with it and its simple enough for the children to pick up pretty quickly.

My wife was cut in half once! It was for a special-needs school she is the nurse of and she was selected by a magician to saw in half to the delight of the children. Now she's been through it, she knows exactly how it, and similar tricks are done so the magic man has to be careful who he selects from the audience!

I saw the 'reveal' on one of those street levitation things and it turned out to be a forklift truck, wire and harness, actors and camera work...no more real than any special effect. Also seen quite a few of the Penn & Teller reveals, I'll give them their due there was a lot of thought in some of the props.

Great to see that there is still a lot of interest in magic. I've been performing magic for around 20 years and have been a member of the Magic Circle for 7 years. In the last couple of years there has been a lot more magic on the TV and as a result a lot more people have been booking a magician for their wedding, birthday party, staff party etc. This has been good for me and in the last year I've done more performances than ever and my calendar for this year is starting to fill up already:smile:
As a lot of people have said on this thread, seeing good close up magic is both very entertaining and baffling. I would thoroughly recommend attending a public event at the Magic Circle in London. You get a chance to look around the museum as well as seeing both close up and stage magic in a really magical setting. Take a look here:

I enjoyed watching the programme where a masked magician would do the magic trick then show you how it was done. Most of the time things were obvious anyway but a few things took me by surprise. Wonder it the Magic Circle ever found out who he was?

Best bit about that show ("Magic's Greatest Secrets Revealed") was the invariable hotness of him assistants.
