Great for the price but over powerd for normal raods .I had one driver saying he did a close overtake because my front light was to bright on flash , he must have missed my 4 rear lights and christmas tree reflective effect

I have just ordered mine today.

I had been thinking of buying one for a while after seeing a friends. But last night on my way into work, I saw for the first time the effectiveness of this light. I was cycling along a well lit road, and in the distance I could see a flashing light. I worked out that it was another cyclist, probably about 3/4 of a mile away. The light given off was fantastic and highly effective.
As I pulled up at the front of my workplace, the other cyclist appeared again. It was only my mate! Although I had seen his magicshine before and was impressed, this was the first time I had seen it in 'action'. It made my combo of a 5w and 10w headlight sysytem look pretty pitiful.
Anyway as I often ride in to work along a cliff top path in near total darkness in places, I decided to buy one. Should be here in 3 or 4 days.

When I spoke to my mate last night, he said that it was the first time he had used his since last winter and that was the last time he charged it. His commute takes him around 50 minutes and it was still going strong when I say him.

I think I'd prefer a longer runtime than that. Okay for commuting if you get into the habit of sticking it on charge every (other) day but it'd be a limitation for my purposes.

Btw, I do know this thread is in 'commuting'!

I could be tempted with the 'mickey mouse' 816 light head only as I have two spare batteries from my 818 rears (which are running off AA battery packs)........

Would just shove that on the MTB with the 'bracket' modification you can do.

DX have a number of models (i.e. different modes), the 3 mode one or the 836 (silver) model uses 30% then 100% and a flash, so you run on 30% most of the time on a commute, then 100% for unlit/off road sections. 3 hours on max is good, you'll more than double that on 30%.

Riding mine in the dark this morning I decided to run it on low a bit, a lot of people run lights like this anyway, and some even use it on the magicshine going "its more than enough for the road", but comparing Low to the High mode makes Low suck, and I use high almost everywhere there isn't street lights (95% of my commute).

2hrs+ is easy on high, you should be looking at 2.5hrs, although if you drop it to low at the 2hrs mark you should have another 1-3hrs in low.

You can use the low mode for more than 2x the run time, you do have to balance it against though and you're not going to get much longer really without different cells or a more efficent LED.

It is possible and very easy to build extended battery packs etc, with lithium (as used) or just regular nimh.

Also, even off road or on longer rides, how long do you actually ride continuously without stopping? even for 5 minutes? get a second battery pack and switch them over at that point

I love my Magicshine! Had it since September - Always run it on high as it interferes with my cateye wireless computer on medium / low settings.

Gives me a nice warm feeling inside when I see people riding around with lesser lights or nice bright lights that cost them 5x what I paid...

2 things I think they could improve on it though...

1. A switch on the unit or cable or no LED when plugged in so I don't have to plug / unplug the lamp before and after rides
2. Constant flashing mode instead of strobe / SOS modes (!!???WHY!??!!)

1. The "mickey mouse" 1400 has a bar mounted button (still has the status LED though).

2. The 3 mode has a proper flashing mode (low, high, flash)
