So there I was about to press the buy button for a magic shine, after convincing myself that I do not wish to break another rib due to not seeing where I am going and thie thread develops into concerns abou tthe battery packs and chargers.
So just to be clear, if I buy the magic shine, what else do I realistically need to buy to ensure pain free ownership and a conscience free from the burden of killing everyone in my block of flats. Ironically the last occupant tried to burn them down with a faulty tumble drier.

I don't mind shelling out for better batteries, better chargers etc but what do I need

I unplug mine because I keep the battery pack in the pannier.

All the worries are just nitpicking. Everyone thinks lithium = fire risk and its going to burn your house down and spread so far it will burn your local fire station down requiring the army to attend to put the fires out - it just isn't.

The battery pack due to the way its charged will probably have a shorter life than other battery packs, although other people charge their normal AA etc in 2ch chargers for 4 cells etc so nothing different there.

If you read manuals, even charging AA NiMH should be attended. I wouldn't leave lithium on overnight, but I certainly won't sit in the same room staring at them - just so long as you don't charge it under a pile of paperwork or near some curtains - probably not advisable next to a box of fireworks either.

The worries really are very minor - and afterall a new battery pack will only cost you $20 - and even commercial lights battery packs will degrade over time (specially multiple series cells which charge with just 2 wires).

Example of this, the magicshine has 4 cells, a proper balancer will need 5 wires to charge all these cells individually. Here is a 3 cell heli battery, you see the charging cable has 4 wires.

What would be omst ideal, is to get a 4x 18650 battery caddy, they're not widely available and charge cells in a dedicated charger.

There are, just coming out Magicshine lights with 3 Cree XPG R5's in them, 1200 lm rated or a Q5 with about 1000 lm rating - these look interesting.

For battery worries, they are cheap to replace anyway.
